  • Description

The rose plant can be described as erect, trailing or climbing shrub with thorn-covered stems that have diverse sizes and shapes. Its leaves are defined as pinnately compound, alternate, sharply toothed, and to some extent oval. The flowers of the rose, in general, possess five petals whose colors vary from orange and yellow to white and pink to the best variety – the true red rose.

Two types of rose oil are produced. One is rose otto oil and the other is rose absolute. They might be used for the same things, but they are produced differently.

While the otto is received through delicate steam distillation from Rosa damascena, the rose absolute oil is produced through solvent extraction and results in a high yield. The latter has more viscosity and quickly solidifies when exposed to cooler temperatures. That’s why it’s better to warm it up before usage.

The color varies from olive green to reddish orange and bears a gentle floral aroma. Among the two oils, the typical rose scent comes rather from the somewhat cheaper variety – absolute oil.

Nerol, Carvone, Citronellol, Stearpoten, Citrene, Citral and hints of Phenyl Ethanol, Nonanol, and Phenylacetaldehyde are what typically constitutes the rose absolute’s chemical composition.

When diluted, there are no reported side effects of the oil, but when topically applied at full strength, it may cause skin irritations. Avoid contact with sensitive areas, mucous membranes, and the eyes.

  • History and Origin

The perennial, shrubby plant hails from the Rosa genus, belonging to the Rosaceae family, and is principally native to Northern Hemisphere’s moderate areas. Over the world, there are more than a hundred rose species, the big majority of which stem from Asia despite some originating in Europe, northwest Africa, and North America.

  • Uses / Effects

Rose absolute oil is a wonderful anxiety and stress reliever. A study in 2009 discovered that the application of rose oil to the skin leads to a much better relaxation response than what would a placebo oil provide. Furthermore, it also reduced the blood pressure and breathing rate more than those people who got a placebo oil.

Other studies show that mixing rose oil with almond, clary sage, or lavender oils, and then applying it topically significantly reduced symptoms of dysmenorrhea and menstrual cramps within female college students.

Massaging women, suffering from menopausal symptoms, with rose, lavender, geranium, and jasmine oils was proved to greatly improve their menopause cycles and alleviate the associated symptoms.

    Use in aromatherapy
Before using rose absolute oil in aromatherapy, it is highly recommended to dilute it in a proper way in vegetable oil or jojoba oil in advance since it is very concentrated a solution.

    Use in perfume industry
Large perfume producers and fragrance formulators make use of rose absolute oil owing that to its potent aroma and cheaper cost than rose otto oil.

    Therapeutic use
Next to bearing a potent fragrance, rose absolute oil effectively fights menopausal symptoms and menstrual cramps, relieves stress and anxiety, and possesses soothing and cooling characteristics, as well as uplifting, calming, and anti-inflammatory properties.
